Canoeists paddle for the best

EMMARENTIA – Paddlers from Dabulamanzi Canoe Club recently made their mark at the Chilli Bite River Race.

Paddlers from Dabulamanzi Canoe Club based in Emmarentia Dam, participated in the 18km Chilli Bite River Race on 14 June.

The race which was hosted by Victoria Lake Canoe, saw numerous beginners and novices gaining experience and working toward A-grade status.

According to spokesperson for Gauteng Canoe Union Jennie Dallas, the race gave paddlers a training opportunity.

“Despite the name Chilli Bite the race day was sunny and pleasantly warm and very enjoyable,” she said.

The race started in Meyerton on the Klip River and finished in Three Rivers, just before the junction with the Suikerbos, and the Vaal River.

Dabulamanzi paddlers, Vaughn van der Merwe partnered with novice paddler Rowan Bryant finished as the third double boat, in 01:29: 00 and won the sub-veteran combination.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Oldert and his daughter Ruth, who have previously finished a Fish River A-grade river marathon, finished as the second mixed double pair (male / female) in 01:30:00.

The race also hosted a long training race for paddlers planning to do the Berg River Marathon in July.
