Students at the Alchemy Dojang in Blackheath are training hard in a number of disciplines, weapons and forms for the upcoming Tang Soo Do World Championships in Las Vegas.
Eight of the students from the Dojang will join team South Africa in the championships from 31 July to 1 August. Master Gregory Hart, the coach for the South African squad, said students have been trained in a variety of events and will compete individually and in team events, across traditional and non-traditional disciplines.
“The weapons events include bong, short stick and sword. The SA team currently consists of 29 competitors from nine years onwards. We will strive to make South Africa proud and make sure that whatever does stay in Vegas, won’t be medals.”
No stranger to the competition himself, Hart has represented the country numerous times at the competition – bringing back an accolade or two. Tang soo do is a Korean martial art that focuses on strength, fitness, balance, control and dedication.
