EMMARENTIA – The Gauteng Canoe Union Championships race identified the top talent in sprint canoeing to represent the Gauteng team at the upcoming interprovincial races.

The Gauteng Canoe Union Sprint Championships took place at Roodeplaat Dam on 29 March.

The race was hosted to identify the top talent in sprint canoeing to represent the Gauteng team at the upcoming interprovincial races.

Paddlers participated in a cross section of races with distances of 200m, 500m, 1 000m, as well as a long distance race of 2 000m.

Paddlers Sean Evans won the open men’s races by taking first place in his age category, while Meyer Steyn in an older age group also won in his category – both are members of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club based at Emmarentia Dam.

“It was a super lovely day, no wind, which is important when lining up for sprint races – some of the races were really close finishes and exciting,”said spokesperson for Gauteng Canoe Union Jennie Dallas.

Paddlers will also be looking forward to the South African Sprint Championships which will take place at Roodeplaat Dam over the Easter weekend and teams representing Gauteng will take on the interprovincial challenge.

“It will be very interesting to see what the Gauteng competitors bring to this competition and we look forward to seeing some of our top paddlers taking the podium positions,” concluded Dallas.
