UJ defeat the Madibaz

JOBURG – A stellar performance from UJ in the Varsity Cup as they thrash NMMU with a final score of 42–13.

It was game time at Port Elizabeth as the men from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) faced off against an eager to win team from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) for the fourth round of the Varsity Cup on 2 March.

NMMU drew first blood when CJ Velleman broke through UJ’s defence and brought the score to 8–0 within the first three minutes.

The men from UJ fought back and levelled the score after 10 minutes, followed by a second try that put them in the lead with 13 points to the Madibaz’s meagre 8 points.

Thirty six minutes into the match it was easy to see who was the superior team when UJ held a 21–8 lead over the home-ground team.

The first yellow card went to the visiting team when lock David Antonites tripped an opponent and was sent off immediately, this turned the 15-man team into a 14-man team but this didn’t deter UJ from racking up points.

Following the yellow card the Madibaz turned up the heat and they progressed closer to UJ’s try line but Robert de Bruyn intercepted a pass and sprinted to the oppositions try line and brought the score to an impressive 26– 3 for UJ.

The UJ onslaught continued as the team ended the match with an unbeatable 42–13 win.

UJ’s next match will take place on 9 March at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch against the Maties from the University of Stellenbosch.
