Van Weely claims second Formula racing title

LINDEN – Nicholas van Weely claims the Formula Volkswagen title.

After a year of competing, local talent Nicholas Van Weely (25) managed to claim the Formula Volkswagen title at Zwartkops in Pretoria on 1 November.

The competition which runs from March to November saw him racing to the finish line with pride. “It was so wonderful winning the race,” he said.

“It is actually a feeling that I cannot express, because it feels great to be the person who claimed the title – it took me a few days to realise that I won it.”

Van Weely is not a stranger to being a title holder – in 2009 he claimed the Formula Ford title and stated that he is proud to have the second title.

He blithely added, that he is motivated by his father Robin Van Weely, who used to race, and is now helping him with the competitions.

”I am following in my father’s footsteps,” he said.

Van Weekly senior was excited for his son’s achievements.

“I am proud of my son, when he won, it was the best feeling ever,” he said.

Despite getting the applause from his friends and family, Van Weely junior believes that hard work always pays.

He also stated that he has always looked up to race drivers such as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, however he is now his own hero.

I do it for the love of sport. You don’t receive a price for being the title holder, you are only acknowledged – I am doing this for the pride,” said the new title holder.

People should not race on the road, if you are interested in racing, then the race track is good for you, he advises.

He also informed that he will be looking to claim more titles in the future.
