The final Gauteng Canoe Union School League ended the season on a high note at Emmarentia Dam on 8 November.

The league has been going for more than 10 years, and runs from January to November annually.

There were 54 primary schools who were represented throughout the year and 60 high schools.

St David’s, who recognises canoeing as a school sport, was once again the winner of the Primary School Award, while the high school was placed as third top high school.

On the other hand, Parktown Girls won the second top high school position, with Hoërskool Parys claiming the first position.

St David’s canoeing team representative Tracey Watkins expressed her joy regarding the tournament.

“The event was a huge success. It went very well and I just want to congratulate everyone for giving their all throughout the year,” said Watkins.

Gauteng Canoe Union Spokesperson Jennie Dallas also informed that she is happy about everyone’s performances.

“It was a super day with nearly 150 juniors participating – even a novice race. The youngsters were really excited and there was a great vibe. The U8 and U10 were so enthusiastic and loved the races,” said Dallas.

She also explained that points were awarded on a sliding scale for each race completed from winner to last finisher.

“The accumulated points at the end of the year dictated the individual winners, as well as the top schools represented out of some 60 as well as the top club points achievers,” explained Dallas.

The highlight of the day was when the winning club and winning primary and winning high schools received a floating trophy for their hard work.
