‘If you believe in yourself you can accomplish everything’ – Adri Visser

AUCKLAND PARK - Adri Visser tells of how she enjoys motivating individuals to do well.

Ever wondered what inspires and motivates paralympian swimmer Adri Visser?

Visser describes herself as person who knows what she wants out of life.

Speaking at Netcare Rehabilitation Hospital in Auckland Park, Visser informed that she believes she is a living example and circumstances don’t define her.

“I push myself to be the best swimmer, however, my sport doesn’t define me,” shared the swimmer.

She adds, “What I have accomplished in my life is overwhelming sometimes, but because of my faith I know that this has happened for a reason and I want to show people from all walks of life what can happen if you believe in yourself.”

Visser was born disabled after her mother contracted German measles during pregnancy, but said she doesn’t let her circumstances define her.

She started swimming in 2001, and has never looked back since. Visser sees her journey as liberating.

She also describes herself not only as an icon for those striving for sports excellence, but also to those who have lost hope.

This year, Visser has been breaking boundaries, she participated in the SA Telkom National Swimming Championship and received two new SA records. She also made a name for herself when she participated at the Pan Pacific Para Swimming Championships Pasadena California (USA) and received two new African records in 50m butterfly and 200 individual medley.

“I grew up knowing that nothing in this world should ever stop your purpose – I always tell people who follow me to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.”

Visser has been nominated for the 2014 Sports Awards for Sportswoman of the Year with disability and will go against hand-cyclist Justine Asher and wheelchair tennis player Kgothatso Montjane

“I have won medals this year, but nothing compares to being nominated for sports awards – this means a lot to me,” said the beaming Visser.
