A huge amount of laughter was heard while they were testing their skills.

But as the players became more proficient, and the drinks supplied by the Marks Park team helped to loosen the inhibitions, the competition was on.

Wednesday, 11 September was a day to be remembered at the Marks Park Bowling Club when the Club hosted Redpath Mining for their annual team building event.

The Redpath team of 46 players arrived in their big bus just after 9am, all dressed in their team shirts, tackies, hats and sun cream. Tea, coffee and delicious muffins were waiting for them on their arrival, which had been prepared by the Marks Park catering team.

They were welcomed by Marks Park Bowls Club president Brian Zimmerman, who explained how the game was played.

Once everyone received their bowls, which were provided by the Club, they all headed off enthusiastically to the green, accompanied by the Marks Park Bowls members, who were on each rink to assist the visitors.

“They very soon discovered that it was not all that easy to place the bowl right next to the little white jack,”Marks Park club manager Gareth Passmore recounted amused.

“The wrong bias, the ‘ditch’ balls and even some bowls, which just preferred to roll towards the jack on the rink next door!”

The lunch bell rang to signal the end of the game.

Many players were keen to continue, but as the smell of the lunch, which had also been prepared by the Marks Park Caterers, wafted out, they slowly started to make their way inside.

Many of them had also, by this stage, also discovered muscles they didn’t know they had.

Prizes were awarded to, among others, the most enthusiastic skip, the most wrong bias bowls, the most ditch balls, the most dangerous player and the player with the biggest mouth.

“All in all, a great day was had by all – the Redpath team as well as the Marks Park Bowls members,” Passmore concluded.

“The Marks Park Bowls Club in situated in the grounds of the Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. We have a beautiful clubhouse, ideally suited to hosting functions. We welcome all new players of any

level and other Companies who may want to hold a similar Day.”
