Dreams of a bright future lights scholar’s path

Local teen shares her big-picture ideals as she aspires to leave a positive impact on the world.

Ratanang Ibenam speaks of dreams and hopes for her future.

Here is what she had to say:

Everyone calls me ‘Nunu’ and my dream is to become a multi-hyphenate in the writing space one day.

I am very passionate about activism also. The topics I would touch on are racism, ableism, sexism, homophobia, generational trauma and emotional abuse.

The following spaces I would like to take up are social media, songwriting, poetry, novel penning, screenwriting, television shows and writing for newspapers and magazines.

As an autistic pansexual person of colour who goes by both she/her and they/them pronouns, I believe that representation is extremely important as cliched as that might sound.

My inspirations and influences are Amanda Gorman, Rupi Kaur, the Bronté sisters and the like. I know for a fact that I am capable of contributing something important and special to the world someday.

I am also interested in world news, South African current affairs and both local and international pop culture and celebrity reports.

My plan, for now, is to share my work through numerous social media platforms before eventually moving into mainstream waters in the near future.

I’m aspiring to study creative writing, English literature, philosophy copywriting and history at Oxford or Cambridge universities in the UK.

Before that though, I want to take a gap year to travel and do internships, job shadowing and apprenticeships in my desired career field fist.
