OPINION: It is their job to clean

BLACKHEATH – Leila Babich writes about the City of Joburg's failure to deliver services.

Leila Babich of Blackheath writes:

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry after reading the Northcliff Melville Times’ front page of May 24.

It was all about councillors, residents and the City of Joburg linking up to nobly clean up a small section of road along Beyers Naudé Drive.

Councillor Lorimer says, (and I kid you not), “We are grateful for the City of Johannesburg coming out and helping!”

I ask you with tears in my eyes – has everyone become punch drunk to the mess and squalor we now live in?

Have we become blinded to the fact it’s the City of Johannesburg’s job to clean and maintain our suburbs on a regular basis?

Not just as a special once-off, beg-and-plead favour!

Has no one at the City of Joburg come to grips with the fact that a good proportion of the vast sums of money they receive each month, is from us, the ratepayers, who collectively cough up our hard-earned money each month to pay for such basic services!

Roll on the winds of change!

We are ‘gatvol’ of all the ineptocracy.

We want full and decent services in return for our money.
