Take a stand against crime

Social media has become like a crime bulletin.

Every time I open Facebook, my feed looks like a crime report.

Stories of people being beaten up, robbed, hijacked, shot and killed is all you see on Facebook these days. And if it is not about crime, then it’s about animal abuse.

Seeing this every day makes you feel so unsafe and depressed. Some of these stories are so horrific it actually leaves me speechless. What kind of world are we living in?

Being an editor, it is part of my job to inform people and report on these crimes, and I am sure I am exposed to these stories more often than the average person. However, it is clear from what people are sharing and posting on Facebook – everyone is living in fear.

Our homes look like prisons and most people are too afraid to walk in the street. All this while the criminals terrorising our neighbourhoods walk freely in the streets.

I do believe that posting crime reports on Facebook and sharing information about criminal activity is important, but this is not going to solve our problems.

I don’t have the answer to rid our communities of crime, but I think as law abiding citizens, we need to take a stand against the minority that has taken over our country.

If you are not already part of a CPF or neighbourhood watch, I encourage you to join one of these groups and get involved. If enough of us band together, perhaps we can chase the criminals out of our suburbs.
