How to justify a new Christmas tree

The budget is incredibly tight at this time of year and very little wiggle room for extra items.

Every December for the past thirteen years I’ve put up the same Christmas tree with the same old decorations, so it’s no wonder I’m not exactly jumping up and down at the thought of once again dusting the trusty old tree off.

It’s not that the decorations are broken or that the tree has started looking tired. I’m just bored.

My problem is that the Dutch in me simply cannot waste or buy new things when the old ones are perfectly good or can be fixed. My conscience can’t handle it and try as I might I haven’t been able to justify a new tree or decorations. Then it hit me. Donate the whole tree with the decorations!

Why I didn’t come up with this ages ago I have no idea. There are so many people who would love my tree and decorations.

So, while I am very excited about my solution there’s still one catch. I’ll have to donate it next year because I can’t bring myself to pay full price for a tree and decorations that will be discounted by 50 or even 75 per cent come 1 January.

Although I’m a little disappointed I’ll have to wait one more year, I think I’m going to enjoy my tree this year knowing it’s the last time I’ll be looking at the same old decorations.
