OPINION: Neem oil as a natural skin medicine

Neem oil contains extraordinarily high levels of antioxidants that help protect the skin from damage.

Neem oil is a natural remedy and is high in important fatty acids and vitamin E; and is easily absorbed into the skin without leaving it greasy. It is commonly used for skin irritations including eczema, bites and fungal infections.

If you are experiencing dry, flaky skin or eczema, consider using Neem oil. It will reduce inflammation and heal abrasions and is very soothing for eczema sufferers. It will also relieve swelling and redness by supporting the body’s ability to respond to inflammation by inhibiting both the manufacture and release of histamine and other irritants.

The oil can also be used to fight fungus (including nail fungus), ringworm and Athlete’s Foot as it is known to be:
• antiviral – inhibits the growth of viruses
• anti-fungal – inhibits the growth of fungi
• antibacterial – destroys the growth of bacteria

Neem oil is very strong, so always use a carrier oil, like olive oil or sweet almond oil. Alternatively add it to Vaseline. Use a ratio of 1:5 – one drop of Neem oil to five drops of a carrier. You can also add 15ml of Neem oil to warm water as a cleansing soak.
