As stated many times before, the residents of Ward 69 accept the need for a responsible and planned densification and mixed use land development plan.

I am therefore rather surprised and concerned about the comment made by the MMC of development and planning (Rosslyn Greef) at the second public meeting held on the 29th of October, where she described the residents of Ward 69 as extremely hostile.

I would like to point out that the densification proposal was presented to the community at the first public meeting without any prior public participation. After the plan was presented to the community, a two and a half hour discussion followed where various concerns were raised. The MMC, Ms Greef was only present for the first twenty minutes of the meeting.

Had Ms Greef stayed longer, she might have gained a better understanding of pressing issues raised by the community.

Another unaddressed issue is the petition signed by more than 500 residents in ward 69 regarding illegal land use in our area. It was handed in at the MMC’s office more than six months ago and until now we have received no feedback.

Ward 69 is one of the most integrated areas in Gauteng regarding home ownership. It is a diverse community, home to rich and poor, including many races and cultures.

As homeowners we have a common goal, and that is to see a responsible and planned densification programme, which also includes the interests of the residents in Ward 69.

I was also rather amazed by a comment made by an official of JHB council. I quote: “if developers decide to build a block of flats on either side of your residential property, then also develop your property or sell your house.”

Many residents have extensively invested in their properties and do not have the desire or the financial means to move or develop.

I suggest that the MMC should regard Ward 69 as a cautious rather than hostile community, that could perhaps assist her with the planning process.
