Auckland Park Preparatory School girls attain great scholarships

The school recognised the success of some of their girls who recently received scholarships from fantastic local schools.

Among the classrooms full of young girls eager to excel academically, culturally and through sports at Auckland Park Preparatory School (Apps) are five Grade 7s who have made their school extremely proud by them acquiring scholarships to three of the city’s best schools.

Sarah von Gottberg-Cohen, Hannah Sayed, Rachel Stevens, Layla Antonie and Addison Doolan were each recipients of scholarships at either Roedean School, St Teresa’s School or Northcliff High School.

Principal of Apps, Chantel Jarvis, said the school had always had a high percentage of girls receive scholarships, and these were rewards for one’s talent and skill. “Though it aids in the financial pressures, it has never been about financial reasons but rather the girls’ aptitude and ability.” She added that although it showed the work put in by the girls to attain these scholarships, it also goes to show the sort of environment that had allowed the learners to prosper.

Sarah received the highest academic scholarship from Roedean School, the Anne Cleaver scholarship. In high school, she looked forward to taking part in activities such as Tour De Maths, a competition that is designed to demonstrate to learners the relevance of mathematics outside of the classroom setting. Peer, Hannah, did an equally phenomenal job attaining the same school’s Joan Raikes scholarship, also in academics.

A teacher at Apps, Claire Rowan, said all these learners showed great confidence with amazing self-esteem to have the courage to put themselves out there in hopes of getting what they want. “Apps does produce well-rounded girls and we can see this through these learners who are brilliant.” Rowan hoped younger girls would see these achievements and be inspired to achieve these accolades themselves.

Layla is spoilt for choice and has her pick of two great schools, Northcliff High School and St Teresa’s. She received sports and cultural scholarships from each school respectively. Addison also received a sports scholarship from Northcliff for her swimming. On the day of her swimming trials, she remembered having left with a sense of defeat, as she questioned whether she had given her best swim on the day. This achievement certainly proved she had performed her best.

Jarvis said the success of each one of these learners could be traced back to the work put in by all the teachers, right down to Grade 1, who, along with their parents, helped lay the foundation of aiding the girls to be the success they would continue to become.

Also having set her sights on Roedean is Rachel who received a cultural scholarship. This is said to be the first time in close to 20 years, that a speech and drama learner from Apps received a cultural scholarship.

The idea of meeting and befriending new people is just one of the aspects that excites the bright-eyed Rachel.
