Traits of a good entrepreneur are said to be someone who is ready to take on different challenges, has a strong sense of self-awareness, and knows when they need to make hard decisions. These must have been the traits the Grade 7 learners of De La Salle Holy Cross College (DLSHCC) Junior School tapped into when they hosted their peers to a market day.

Teacher at the school Antony Bullen said the day gave a great chance for learners to turn the theories that they have been taught into a practical experience, “As well as learning to work with others to achieve their goals, as they needed to work in teams to pull their ideas together.” On the day, each grade was allocated a shopping slot, which most likely gave them enough time to decide what they would spend their money on. Stalls that saw the most profit this year were the fair ground rocket ride, the water balloon babies, and the ever-popular ice-cream stalls.

“Some, unfortunately, learn how easy it is to lose money as an entrepreneur, but some get the thrill of making a profit, which could inspire their future dreams,” said Bullen. Adding that a reflection on what could have been done differently was an important part of the learning process after the day.
Bullen said the ultimate success of the day are are bonds formed by the Grade 7 groups, the fun had by the lower grades that come to the market day, and the excitement for those who make a profit.
All profits raised goes to charity. This reflects the school’s ethos, which is: First, that we may be of service.
