The school hosted a study skills workshop for learners in grades 5-8 and their parents. This workshop provided practical strategies to help parents support their children as they prepare for their exams. These strategies included prioritising tasks, setting goals and planning, time management tools, active reading strategy and techniques to summarise information, memory strategy as well as tools to reduce test/exam anxiety.

Crossroads School plans to host these workshops twice a year.

Teacher Michele Frew said the school’s plan moving forward was to host the workshop twice a year. “This was the first study skills workshop of this type, offered to both parents and learners at Crossroads,” she added.
She explained that some fears parents may have during exams included whether their child would be able to study and pass their exams, whether their child knew how to study, how exam time impacted the stress levels of the family and possible conflict – pressure from parents on learners to study.
