New leaders for 2024/2025 of De La Salle Holy Cross College appointed

The newly appointed leaders for 2024/2025 now take the reigns at the school. The paper spoke to the new head boy and head girl.

Many know that with great power comes great responsibility but few will take heed of this proverb quite like the newly appointed 2024/2025 leaders of De La Salle Holy Cross College (DLSHCC).

The cohort of new leaders have taken up the challenge this new role requires of them, a journey head girl and head boy, Keira Leask and Amkele Dladla, plan to take the helm of with great pride.

It took a while for Leask to process that she had made head girl, even so, it was an opportunity she met with great excitement. In her opinion, the traits of a good leader include someone who is able to listen, is hardworking, understanding, and is generous with their time. From him, Dladla hopes the younger generation are inspired to serve so that they may be first to be of service. “Also, to respect one another and find joy in helping each other and the teachers,” he said. Leask echoed his sentiments, adding she also wants to be someone others can aspire to be like.

The pair consider themselves to be introverts, with Leask saying that even though she enjoys meeting new people, she gets nervous when speaking in front of crowds. “But I think the more I do it, it starts getting easier each time. You remind yourself that when people are listening to you they don’t want you to fail,” she said.

While he hopes to maintain the relationships he has forged with learners in younger grades, Dladla hopes to showcase the growth of these relationships, as he recognises the dynamics of theses connections now need to change, given his new role.

Though he had put his name down for nomination, Nick Basson, who forms part of the cohort of leaders, had no idea that he would actually get the opportunity to be part of the leadership team. He described a good leader as someone who has good communication skills, a trait that will help one be able to put their viewpoint across without conflict. “I also think you need to be patient, because people have different views and some of those might not be as yours, so you have to willing to hear others.”

Fellow leader Emily Chirwa shared how it was her support system, found within various teachers that helps boost her belief that she could be a great leader. She still doesn’t believe that her peers had so much belief in her. Within her role she hopes to bring unity.
