The NRC’s mission to beautify and maintain local island

Northcliff Rotary Club has transformed the corner of Beyers Naude Drive into a vibrant community space through dedicated maintenance and beautification efforts.

A small piece of land, located on the corner of Beyers Naude Drive, has found a dedicated caretaker in the Northcliff Rotary Club (NRC). Although initially acquired by the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) in June two years ago, the NRC has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the island’s cleanliness and beauty.

Dave Woodhouse of the NRC stated that they adopted the land in 2022. However, as the land still belongs to the JRA, they simply ensure its cleanliness and safety. “We visit the land every second Saturday, with our activities divided between morning pothole repairs and afternoon maintenance of the island.”

Their efforts include picking up rubbish and paper that accumulates, contributing to the island’s cleanliness and overall appeal.

Woodhouse explained that the club took the initiative to eliminate weeds and involve the community in the beautification process.

They requested plant donations from community members, which were then planted on the island. Additionally, they put up signs promoting road safety, with sponsorships from Woody’s Rubberising and Waterproofing and Beagle Watch.

Woodhouse noted that the NRC did not purchase the land, but rather adopted it under the permission of the JRA. “After a two-year process of communication and negotiations, the JRA granted the club permission to maintain the land.”

He stated that they adopted the island in an effort to help the community, and let the public know about the NRC and their passion for enhancing the local environment and promoting road safety awareness.
