Esihle Plaatjie, a 25-year-old student at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), is defying stereotypes and inspiring others with his journey as a male netball player. His passion for the sport, coupled with unwavering self-acceptance, has made him a standout member of the UJ Netball Club.

Plaatjie’s path to netball was unconventional. Initially captivated by the sport’s speed and strategy, he joined the UJ Netball Club in his second year doing a Diploma in Marketing, seizing an opportunity to embrace his unique passion. Despite personal challenges like anxiety and anomic aphasia he persevered, helping his team reach the USSA championship finals.

For Plaatjie, the UJ Netball Club has become more than just a sports team – it’s a supportive community that has embraced him wholeheartedly. The club has provided a safe space for him to express his true self, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance.

“Being part of the UJ Netball Club has been transformative,” he said. As it has helped him embrace his uniqueness and overcome personal struggles.
