Additional sandwiches were sent to the Linden South African Police Service (SAPS) station, ensuring that those who protect and serve the community were also cared for. Roosevelt High School and university students dedicated themselves to the cause by tirelessly working to prepare the sandwiches at school. These student’s sandwiches were then collected by the Department of Health, who took charge of distributing the sandwiches to various locations. The impact of this collaborative effort extended beyond the immediate vicinity, with ward governance taking sandwiches to an informal settlement, ensuring that no one was left without a meal on this special day.

Felicity Lawlor, co-coordinator of the project stated that the success of this endeavour can be attributed to the collective efforts of numerous organisations and individuals. Pikitup, City Parks, Johannesburg Water, the Department of Health, pre-schools, primary schools, high schools, universities, scouts, old age homes, residents, the Let’s Work team, and the SCP all played a vital role in the sandwich-making process. In a remarkable act of sponsorship, Eastern Temptations, alongside generous residents, provided the bread and spreads necessary to create the sandwiches. Additionally, they sponsored the Mandela Day tags, adding a special touch to the initiative. The collective efforts of these organisations and individuals exemplify the true spirit of Mandela Day.
