Fake doctor apprehended at Helen Joseph Hospital

Alleged doctor, Matthew Lani, was apprehended at the hospital after he made his way onto the private hospital in disguise.

Fake doctor Matthew Lani was handed over to police after he was apprehended at Helen Joseph Hospital by its security.

A statement made by Gauteng Department of Health, said they welcomed the apprehension of the bogus doctor which took place on the evening of October 29.

According to the statement, Lani is said to have made his way to the hospital on the day, disguised wearing a hoodie and surgical mask; he also had a stethoscope around his neck.

In the past, the spurious character is said to have used the hospital to curate misleading content under the pretence that he was qualified doctor. It was through TikTok that Lani gained considerable fame. Through this social media platform he punted himself as one the country’s youngest doctors, and gave medical advice to the 50 000 thousand that followed him. On October 9, Gauteng Department of Health opened a case of impersonating a medical doctor against him, at Brixton Police Station.

On the night of his apprehension, Lani requested to go to the bathroom, however, this was just a ploy for him to try and escape. While in the bathroom he attempted to make a break for it through the window. On security’s realisation of what was happening, they called for reinforcement and he was apprehended again. A video of him being apprehended shows how he had five security personnel handcuff him to a chair as he vehemently fought against it.
