Time capsules that make Grade 7s smile at Orban School

The school's Grade 7 class spent one morning unearthing the past as they dug up time capsules they had planted when they were in Grade 1.

Let’s take a journey back to 2017, shall we? But, instead of using just one’s memory, let’s use a message in a bottle.

This is what Orban School did recently with their class of Grade 7s as they took the grade back to when they were Grade 1. At the time, each of them had buried a time capsule and in it they put personal belongings that meant a lot to them – letters from their teachers as well as ones they wrote themselves, along with drawings, photos and newspaper clippings.

October 18, marked the 40 days before their journey at the school comes to an end. The capsules were unearthed on this day – and boy, was it fun for them to travel back in time through the many surprises along the way.

Each learner in the class also received a sweet that symbolised their personality and character. The teachers are described as having gone to great lengths to explain why they chose that specific sweet for a specific child and it was a touching and very uplifting moment. “A huge thanks to the teachers for this morning’s touching ceremony. There are going to be no more tears to shed,” said teacher Michele Stewart.

Fellow teacher, Barbara Scholtz, said the day’s aim was to make the Grade 7s feel extra special.
