Romanian student spends summer break with Growing Champions

Apart from being in awe of the group, Iulia has herself been deeply impacted by their message of hope and resilience.

Iulia Beres from Romania writes:

I had decided to come to South Africa and volunteer over my summer break.

I found out about Growing Champions from the For Good website and after looking at their social media platforms and reading some of their stories, I was determined to join them.

When I started volunteering with them, I was surprised by the warmth and joy I was welcomed within the community. I felt accepted and understood by people who did not know much about me, and I desperately wanted to reciprocate these feelings.

Without realising, I slowly started to stay longer hours at the charity and became more and more involved in their projects. I asked for extra tasks and considered what topics I wanted to discuss with their change leaders. Change leaders are the men and women who have come from tough backgrounds and are now part of the solution for others needing help.

For me, being around the change leaders and getting to know them better has been one of the highlights of my stay.

I was truly inspired by these champions who have overcome so many difficulties, yet they are still here, fighting for their dreams and giving back to their communities.

I find it quite difficult to fight for what you want to achieve and to stay focused on your goals and the path you are paving for yourself. So, I was surprised to meet these young individuals who are determined not only to break the negative patterns that formed them but also to change their mindsets, core values and build a new life for themselves.

Whenever I was talking with the change leaders, I was touched to see how much their background has impacted them and how Growing Champions lifted them up, gave them hope and empowered them.

Volunteering with Growing Champions has been an amazing opportunity for me, one that I feel extremely grateful for. From being able to get some practical experience in my field (marketing and administration) to participating in various communal projects, they have also shaped me into a better version of myself.

Whether you feel like getting some hands-on experience for your CVs or meeting some kind and empowered South Africans, I do encourage you to contact Growing Champions and follow their journey on social media – you might even feel inspired to become a champion yourself.
