Idle hands make miniature pieces in Roosevelt Park

Every month the Johannesburg Society for Miniature Enthusiasts members meet for a workshop. Find out what a recent one had them construct.

On one recent weekend in Roosevelt Park, miniature enthusiasts met with one intention, to learn how to make a miniature highchair.

Every third Saturday of the month members of the JHB Society of Miniature Enthusiasts meet at Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre. On this day, a workshop, led by a fellow member is held, and they teach others how to create something they recently mastered.

Leading the workshop this time around was Cecilia Rich, and she taught enthusiasts how to make a highchair. “You would have made it yourself, writing down the steps so you know what to follow, then the presenter puts a kit together of all the pieces necessary to make the item and then shares this knowledge with the members.”

To construct this they used gelatin wood, craft sticks and toothpicks. Rich explained that from a furniture perspective, this year, they created various furniture fit for a baby’s room. So far, they’ve done, cradles, play pens, rocking horses as well as stools. To make these miniature pieces, Rich said one needs slightly steadier hands and accuracy, “Because it is so small if you are out by a millimeter it’ll make a difference.”

Being a miniature enthusiast, she has found needs a great deal of concentration, which helps one take their mind off all the other aspects of their life and helps you relax, “You actually forget all your other issues and problems and it gives you a creative outlet at the end of the day,” Rich explained. Adding it gives one a sense of accomplishment to be able to look at something tangible and know they actually did that with their bare hands.
