Radford House celebrates Spring(bok) Day

All things South African were celebrated for Spring Day with learners engaging in special tributes for the Springboks to play their best at the World Cup.

Traditional September 1 celebrations to bid farewell to winter took on a patriotic flavour this year, in the form of Radford House’s Spring(bok) Day festival.

Headmaster Philip Kokots said, “In anticipation of the start of the Rugby World Cup we encouraged learners to embrace their spirit of national pride.”

The day was part education and part fun as pupils played a variety of traditional South African games. They also learned about the origins of the flag and anthems, braaied stokbrood, and competed in an interclass touch rugby tournament.

At the end of the day, pupils, staff members, and parents took the opportunity to write messages of good luck to the Bokke, while expressing (through art, prose, or poetry) reasons why the contributors remain proudly South African. “When complete, 600 of these colourful messages were combined to create a giant flag in honour of the team that, for so long, has flown our national standard the highest.”
