A talk on animal care in Fairland

The SPCA Randburg visited recently spent a morning visiting two schools in this community, which the learners enjoyed immensely.

What do you get when you bring a very happy golden retriever to a school filled with children just as happy to see it? A great morning at Sunbeams Montessori and Fairmont Academy.

The schools were visited by SPCA Randburg who hosted a talk on where they spoke on animal safety and the importance of caring for pets well among many other aspects.

Principal of Sunbeams Montessori, Tarryn Hamel, said they had just spent the previous month visited by various speakers, from different career paths, who all shared with the children what it is they do and the aspects that make their jobs important for the community at large. The children had an absolute ball during this time, learning new aspects of professions such as journalism, and being a volunteer firefighter.

The school had left the SPCA for last as the learners had spent the month collecting pet food for them. Hamel said the organisation had expressed to the school they had a serious shortage of food for the animals. “If we can start teaching children at this young age to do good, and that with the little bit that you have, help someone and mark your mark.”

It was Lily the Golden Retriever who really stole the show on the day. She accompanied one of SPCA Randburg’s volunteers, Josephine Baxter, who taught and spent some time sharing some useful information with the learners. They were all understandably besotted with her and once the talk was over, each child had the opportunity to pet her.
