Friends of Alberts Farm Conservancy are gearing up for the annual All Spruits Clean Up Day and they want you to be part of it.
The clean-up takes place on September 16 from 9am to about midday. World Clean Up Day is on the same day.
According to Rotary Club New Dawn which is organising the event, it was important to keep our spruits clean as time is running out for our rivers and green spaces that support indispensable biological communities. They added that urban development as well as people’s behaviour was putting our spruits under extreme pressure and as a result, they are severely degraded. This emphasised the need for community members to act fast – and clean, rehabilitate and save one of our most beautiful and valuable resources.
The Montgomery Spruit, a branch of the Braamfontein Spruit, runs through the conservancy and on the day will be cleaned up. The Braamfontein Spruit is said to be the longest stream in Johannesburg, flowing through many neighbourhoods from Northcliff all the way to Midrand.
On the day you will need to bring:
- Gloves
- Water bottle
- Hat
- Wear a pair of Wellington boots
- Rakes
- Spades
- Litter pickers
- Pruners
- Wheelbarrow.
The meeting point is at Alberts Farm at the entrance along 10th Street vehicle gate no 5.
