Andries van Eck’s racquets are always at the ready

The Roosevelt Park resident isn't ready to hang up his badminton racquets just as yet.

Even though he is now in his 80s, Andries van Eck can still be found looking agile on the badminton courts.

Reserved and amiable, Van Eck is anything but when those shuttles come hurtling towards him.

Attracted to the sport because of its speed and technique, he has participated in it since 1978. “I also love that you can play at any time, day or night,” he said.

You’re most likely to find him at Berario or Roosevelt Park recreation centres during the week playing the sport he said had managed to help keep him in shape and contributed to his relaxation during some rough times.

In his years of playing, he marks a national title competition he took part in in 1997 as one of his most memorable as it was there that he won his first age group title.
Van Eck concluded badminton kept his body going and his nerves under control. “It is also the spirit at tournaments which is normally excellent and makes playing more enjoyable.”
