Samkelisiwe Thomo reflects on her academic year

As the second semester commences, Samkelisiwe Thomo takes us through her journey as a student.

Samkelisiwe Thomo writes:

My name is Samkelisiwe Thomo, aged 20. I am currently in my third year of study at Wits University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting sciences.

I am looking forward to this second semester, as it is time to redeem ourselves. The last semester was a storm that nearly conquered me. This degree gets even harder instead of getting better. The workload keeps increasing every year. I had to sacrifice all my time and focus on my studies. The university is no child’s play; you need to put your all into your studies.

Fortunately, I have full support from home, which is my coping mechanism. They allow me to break down if I must; that way, it is easier to get back on my feet and move on. They listen and understand me. This new semester, I am returning stronger. I’ve reflected on myself and my results. I know where I went wrong and how to rectify my mistakes. I am hoping to do better than I did last semester.

A challenge that I face as a student is time management, which is very important. Sometimes time works against me, but I am working on that problem right now. It may take longer to grasp the context and content and fully understand them. I hope this semester will treat me better and that I will achieve my desired grades.

All I can say to other students is that there is still time to redeem ourselves; we shouldn’t be discouraged by our June results as we can still change them. The important thing is to start doing things better, reflect on our mistakes, and work towards rectifying them. Another thing we should normalise is seeking help and consulting.
