Fairland CPF continues to impress with professionalism and commitment

The CPF and police give an overview of the policing precinct with victim support volunteers requesting the community use official channels to request help.

The Fairland CPF held its monthly public meeting at the Mosaïek Church.

Acting station commander Captain Howard Mekoa said one case of murder had been opened for the previous month with attempted murder on the rise for the last quarter. Generally, though, crime is stable or declining in other categories.

JMPD represented by Superintendent Simon Maluleke said Westpark Cemetery continued to be a challenge with large numbers of funerals taking place. One weekend alone saw almost 40 with high volumes of mourners attending.

During operations 1 335 roadside checks were conducted with 1 117 vehicles searched, 993 persons searched, and 1 022 citations issued.

The CPF Patrollers logged 87 hours for the month with Mekoa requesting more volunteers to avail themselves to participate in this important crime-fighting activity.

The CPF’s Victim Support Unit (VSU) had an impressive month with 97 hours worked by volunteers who assist victims of crime or other stressful events. Suicide, a missing person, robbery and shooting were leading causes of intervention.

Head of the VSU Dr Sally Röthemeier said, “The VSU may not be contacted by anyone directly. Only the police can call on us for assistance – not even fellow CPF members may do this. There are protocols and boundaries in place which must please be respected.”

CPF Treasurer Rodney Maggs said quotes were being obtained to paint the new container and palisade fence at the station. “A secure cage is also being built to house a larger generator for the station as the smaller one is being overloaded.”

He said some doors have been replaced and interior solar lights are being investigated following the installation of external ones around the buildings.

The Youth Desk under Wayne Fitzgibbon continues to provide support and engage in activities to raise awareness among other young people about crime, drugs, and other ills.

An advertisement has been posted for a permanent station commander which it is hoped will be filled timely.

Bhaai Cassim, secretary for the CPF, has recently been elected to the Johannesburg Central sub-district Community Police Board as secretary and onto the Johannesburg Policing Board, covering 42 stations.
