Join community bridge clubs for card players

Bridge is a well-loved card game which is played socially or more competitively twice a week for retirees in the community.

Betty Ravenscroft is hoping to revive enjoyable card playing for the elderly.

“It was 40 years ago when I came across an advert in the Northcliff Melville Times by Arnold Raath who was teaching bridge for beginners at the Roosevelt Centre. That was when my love of the game started.”

Games are played twice a week for all levels of skill, be it socially or competitively.

“Bridge has got to be the most engaging card game and I can’t stress enough what one gains when playing. It is an opportunity to meet new friends and you can play anywhere you go.”

She says, ‘As we get older, we need to use our brains to learn new things and stay socially connected.”

If you would like to meet up with some new people, learn the game or begin playing again, there are two weekly meetups.

  1. Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre: Monday mornings at 09:30.
  2. Fernadale Community Centre: Wednesday mornings at 09:30
