A Lady of many talents

Ramatema first began writing in primary school as a result of being bullied.

My name is Aysha Ramatema. I am a performer, writer, poet, actor and public speaker. I grew up loving the stage, from primary to high school. With time, I made sure that I better my skills in performing because I always had stage fright even though I don’t show it on stage. My family inspired me to keep on being an artist.

My upbringing was quite okay. My mother was raised well, she has been supportive, and loving and I can say that she has been a rock and I will forever be grateful. I grew up in a very nice township. I went to a private primary school, and I got bullied a bit for being black, but with time the bullying got better.

The bullying got me into writing because everything that I would feel, I would want to write it down and from there, my craft became better. Bullying helped me to become the writer that I am even though it was a thing happening to me. Writing for me is a safe space.

One of the challenges that I`ve come across as an artist is financial strain. One thing that people don`t realise from us as artists is that we struggle to get paid gigs and if you don’t have anything besides your artistry, you will struggle a lot.

I also like sports, I used to run for my schools in primary and secondary even though I was not the best, I`ve always loved running. I played netball, basketball, and soccer. I am good at football, and I used to be a striker. Sports was a huge part of me in my high school and primary days.
