How does preparing 450 sandwiches for the children of the non-profit Fred and Martie Sopkombuis [https://fm-sopkombuis.co.za/] sound? For the learners of Orban School this sounds like a great way to give of their time.
In recognition of Mandela Day, the primary school made sandwiches while their pre-primary and foundation phase counterparts decorated the sandwich bags in which they were packaged in.
The Grade 7s travelled from their Westdene-based school to Claremont where the organisation is situated, to specially deliver the packages. It had taken the whole school about three hours to make all these sandwiches while parents donated the bread, spread, jam and peanut butter.
Their second project started in second term and it asked parents, learners, teachers and ground staff to contribute towards 67 Blankets by knitting squares in order to stitch together blankets. Two knitting workshops were held; one for parents and learners and another for the ground staff.
They managed to knit 345 squares as a school community and now they will stitch all these squares together to form a blanket before they send it to 67 Blankets for distribution.
