When it comes to sewing, she is the best

Marx views fashion design as her first love.

Designing has been part of her since she started her own design company over 20 years ago. Nadene Marx (53) has been designing dresses since she was young. She started designing dresses when she would make dresses for her Barbie doll. The name of her business is New Romantics.

This wonderful designer started making dresses in one room in a townhouse, which she then converted into a garage, and then her husband built an extra section of the house so that she can run her business. “If you can’t beat them, join them,” she says. She hasn’t looked back ever since and has been designing amazing gowns for top models in the country.

“I don’t think I chose to be a designer; it chose me. From being a little girl, I’ve just always played with or rather were creating dresses for my Barbie dolls. It’s part of my DNA, no escaping. My last thoughts are when I go to sleep and first when I wake up. Sometimes I think it’s a curse, very overwhelming, but then you get the thrill of seeing what you created and it’s all worth it. They say creating is one of our soul’s deepest yearnings. Einstein said the sign of true intelligence is imagination, not knowledge,” said Marx.

According to Marx, she has designed nightgowns for South Africa’s top models such as Bokang Montjane, Miss SA 2010, Candice Abrahams, Mrs SA and Mrs World 2016, Palesa Matjekane, current Mrs SA Ndavi Nokeri, and few other pageants like Miss Grand, Mrs Universe Africa, and Miss Supreme Queen.

“What I’ve learned from all these ladies is they want to empower and uplift each other. It’s a sisterhood and friendship. Especially in the pageants. It’s more mature women who have walked a couple of paths in life. As a designer, it gives me a platform to be creative and think outside the box,” she added.

New Romantic`s biggest achievement was organising and hosting their fashion show themed 50 Shades of Pink in March.
