UJ students receive medical care and counselling following bus collision

19 students were in one of the two buses that collided near UJ this morning. Three were transported to a local hospital for further care.

The University of Johannesburg has confirmed that one of the two buses involved in an accident this morning [July 25] was ferrying students between the university’s campuses.

Preliminary investigations indicate that approximately 19 students were on the bus. Three students were taken to a local hospital while 16 others are receiving counselling on campus. No fatalities have been reported. Details about the cause of the accident are a matter of police investigation.

Various support divisions from the university, including the UJ Medical Support Services and Campus Protection were immediately on the scene to assist. The University’s Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD) had also set up counselling services to support affected students.

“The University of Johannesburg is saddened to have learnt that some of its students were injured in the bus accident this morning. Our thoughts are with the affected students and their families. The University will do everything it can to ensure that the students receive the necessary medical care and counselling,” said Herman Esterhuizen, UJ Media Relations Manager.

“The university takes the safety and well-being of its students seriously, and the university will work closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the accident,” he said.
