14th Avenue in Fairland is now reopened following extensive rehabilitation

The second phase of works by Rand Water to fix the collapsed roads to begin as sections now reopen to traffic.

In February a dangerous sinkhole appeared at the busy intersection of 14th Avenue and Willson Street in Fairland.

Caused by failing Rand Water underground infrastructure, the roads had to be closed for extensive repairs and resurfacing.

Phase 1 of the project has now mostly been completed with 14th Avenue reopening to traffic with small jobs like kerb work being finalised.

Ward 89 Councillor Leah Knott said, “Following an update from the community liaison officer for the project, phase 2 focusing on the stretch of road from 14th Avenue to 12th will now commence.”

The second phase will require the closure of internal roads with only residents living along that stretch having access. “Any inconvenience to affected residents is once again sincerely regretted. The contractor has given every assurance to minimise any inconvenience, although some driveways will be affected.”

She says every effort is being made to expedite the work without compromising the quality of the work.

Phase 3 will deal with 12th to 9th Avenues.
