Here are some options if you are looking for something to do on Mandela Day

From helping abandoned babies, making a difference in the lives of sick children or assisting the vulnerable with some food, have a look at what you can do to make a difference this year.

Mandela Day is a time when communities come together to assist the less fortunate and the vulnerable. Held annually on July 18, this year is no different. Here are some options of where you can donate, contribute and get stuck in if desired to make a positive impact on those who need and deserve some kindness.

Abandoned or orphaned babies and children

The Melville Residents Association (MRA) will spend Mandela Day at Hotel Hope.

The charity looks after babies and children who need somewhere to be loved and looked after before they are adopted.

Hotel Hope is an institution in Johannesburg that has helped countless abandoned or orphaned children find their ‘forever homes’ with adoptive families.

Volunteers from MRA are hoping for neighbours and nearby communities to help them spruce up the various homes where the children live.

This includes giving the buildings a new lick of paint, some love for the gardens and other odd jobs.

If you would like to donate some paint, a JoJo tank, a power solution or a grass play area. Free collections and drop-offs are available.

Marang House in Northcliff, which provides a loving home for seriously ill children, is moving, and they need your help.

They are hoping this ‘Mandela Day month’ will bring some cheer and support from individuals and corporations to enable them to provide uninterrupted care for the sick children they care for.

After being in their current location for 20 years, they need to relocate as the house they rent has been sold. Thankfully they aren’t moving far and the 15 children and three staff members who care for them are looking forward to having a new home.

Every contribution, big or small, will have a profound impact on the lives of these young warriors as they face their daily battles with courage and determination.

They have paid tribute to little Nkosana Nkabinde who sadly passed away last week. “He was a brave 11-year-old boy who fought renal failure during his time at Marang House.”

If you can assist with any financial donations or in-kind contributions towards the ongoing needs of the home as well as any assistance with packing or moving will also be gratefully received.

Sandwiches for the needy

The Linden CPF youth desk and Let’s Work are hoping to make 10 000 sandwiches.

They are requesting residents to donate and drop off ready-made sandwiches, or to help make some which will be distributed to old age homes, shelters, and families in need.

Donations can be delivered to Linden police or 107 Preller Drive in Roosevelt Park.

If you would like to get involved, join the team at the Linden Police Station hall on July 16, 17 or 18 from 09:00 to pack and distribute the sandwiches.

Please email helpdesk@lindencpf.co.za for more information.
