My varsity journey so far

With the help of her course, Asakhe hopes to develop her entrepreneurial skills.

My name is Asakhe Mkhutswana, I am 22 years old. I am studying at UJ and I am currently doing my third year of operations management.

I like operations management for a number of different reasons – the first one being the advantage of being able to work in many different fields because of its diverse nature. You can work in different fields such as construction, health, business and many others too. Another reason is that it gives me the ability to think outside the box and it always challenges me.

It works in cohesion with my liking for organising things as well as my aim to do things on time. Operations management provides me with skills on how to manage a business, which is vital because I would like to own a business of my own in the near future. I would love to further my studies after graduating and be an operations manager at a construction company

As a student, I face tough challenges that are mostly related to my mental health and personal wellness. These include dealing with pressure from all angles as well as the anxiety I get while in preparation for exams or just studying in general, homesickness is sometimes a factor too.

During this crucial phase, it is essential to prioritise self-care and seek support from friends, family, and campus resources. Developing healthy coping mechanisms, such as practising mindfulness or engaging in physical activities, can significantly alleviate stress and anxiety.

It is also crucial to maintain a balanced lifestyle by incorporating regular breaks and leisure activities into the study routine. Remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of strength and self-awareness. Surrounding yourself with a supportive community can encourage and motivate you to persevere through challenging times.
I would also like to encourage many students to not give up during their varsity lives because this is an important stage of shaping their future.
