Farewell Brother Cornelius Carey

Brother Cornelius Carey had been a principal at the school from 1986 to 1997 but his presence at the school was still felt for all these years.

De La Salle Holy Cross College recently held a special assembly to bid farewell to someone who had been part of the school for 41 years.

Brother Cornelius Carey. started teaching in 1960 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland. There, he taught every subject except music and was also in charge of the De La Salle Youth Club in the town and coached Gaelic football.

In 1967, he was transferred to De La Salle College in East London, Eastern Cape, and taught history, geography, commercial math and religion. He was appointed vice principal of the school in 1970 and coached rugby, athletics, and cricket, a show of his multiple talents.

By 1973, Carey was transferred back to Ireland and there he taught at De La Salle College in Dublin. In June 1980, he came back to South Africa and taught at La Salle College in Discovery. Two years later he was appointed as head of the Victory Park-based school, De La Salle College, as it was called in those days and held this position until 1998, holding it for 16 years.

During this time, in 1986, he was part of the team to amalgamate De La Salle College and Holy Cross Convent into the school it is today.

Head of high school, Linda Galanakis, said the school would miss seeing Brother Cornelius take his daily walks around the school grounds. “We are going to miss seeing you support the various sports teams, but mostly, we are going to miss your wise counsel.”

She also thanked him for serving South Africans through education for the past 63 years, as well as guiding the school so successfully in an inspirational way which nurtured and maintained its ethos as a Lasallian school. “We wish you a safe journey as you return to Ireland after all these years. I have no doubt that you have South Africa tucked deep in your heart,” said Galanakis.
