The children of Marang House in Northcliff need your help

Indianna Kool says rising costs are stretching the charity beyond its limits and appeals to the broader community to support them as they support critically ill children in need.

Marang House in Northcliff is a non-profit that has provided a loving home for chronically ill children for two decades.

Running costs are exorbitant for the small team as they care for the children who suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes, renal failure, and lung diseases, all needing constant monitoring and specialised medical care.

Indianna Kool says, “The children we look after would be left within the confines of a hospital, devoid of the comfort and stability they desperately need, or possibly even become homeless and perish if it were not for the service we can provide. We, like others, rely on the generous donations of individuals and organisations to keep us afloat.”

Fekile and house mother Salome laugh with the children at Marang House. Seen here are Neo, Rorisang, Pretty, Tlou and Akonaho.

“Marang is the Setswana word for ‘rays of the sun’, but really the word means ‘hope’ to many children.”

They not only provide physical and medical care but also focus on ensuring that children aged between four and 14 receive an education and broader support to help them lead fulfilling lives despite their illnesses.

Little Tlou is one of the children at Marang House.

Rising costs and load-shedding have placed an extra burden on stretched resources.

“Power outages are tough to cope with and it severely impacts on our ability to ensure the well-being and safety of the children.

“We are appealing to our broader community to help with funds if they are able, but also with in-kind donations like perishable and non-perishable food, and toiletries. A single tin of food can make such a difference. No donation is too small, and no thanks ever enough.”

Mogale plays with a fun hat in the garden.

Last week, Netcare Olivedale Hospital donated 100 pairs of socks to the house, much to the delight of the children. House mother Salome said, “We were thrilled with the warm and colourful socks collected through the Socks for Docs fundraiser.”
