Paddle towards victory with Kyle Armdorf

The young paddler heads to the South African Marathon Championships held in St Francis Bay.

With a great aim to follow in forward strokes of canoeists such as Hank McGregor, Andy Birkett and Clinton Cook, is young talented paddler Kyle Armdorf.

The Grade 5 Franklin D. Roosevelt Primary School learner is a member of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club who trains at Dabulamanzi Canoe Club.

Kyle started paddling when he was about four years old, having been introduced to the sport by his canoeist father, Ryno, who started paddling when he too was a child.

Kyle loves the sport for many reasons, one of those being that it allows for travel opportunities. Not only does it have him socialise with people of varying backgrounds from his, but it also allows for the opportunity to travel across our scenic country and hopefully one day, also overseas.

Recently, at the SA School Sprints Championships held at Vitoria Lake Club in Germiston, he is said to have achieved gold in the
2 000m and silver in both the 200m and 500m in the K1 (singles) race. While in the K2 (doubles) race for the same championships, he attained gold in both the 500m and 200m races.

Following his competition in the Gauteng Marathon Championships, where he again garnered great wins in both the K1 and K2 races, he heads to St. Francis Bay where he will take part in the South African Marathon Championships.

His mother, Marcia, said similarly to all the competitions he has taken part in, Kyle is intended on giving his best, and continuing his golden streak across the waters. “I am a proud mother, and a happy one too at that because I get to see my son create his own happiness through a sport he loves.”

She said this sport has helped keep Kyle off the streets as he is quite regularly gliding through the waters.
