Bugs and plants to educate all

An exhibition was recently held at Wits that saw people educated on various animals and plants.

Yebo Gogga, Yebo Amablomo Exhibition was recently hosted at Wits University.

Students and visitors alike, headed to the Oppenheimer Life Sciences Building to see all the different kinds of ‘goggas’ and amablomo- which translated, means plants. The live animals and plants were added to give learners an experience they do not always encounter in the classroom.

This was a free and interactive public exhibition hosted by the university’s School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences. It was put together as a way to celebrate the living planet as it showcased animals, plants, chemistry, paleontology geology and microbiology.

The theme, this year, of the four-day event, had about 30 exhibits who presented their work under this year’s theme ‘Beating the Heat.’ The exhibits are said to have been fascinating exhibits that showed the effect of temperature on plants and animals, how they beat the heat, and what we can do to reduce climate change.

The interactive exhibition was aimed at providing an educational and social outreach service to the Gauteng community by adding its contributions to teaching Life Sciences at schools.
