How petting cats brings a sense of relief in Melville

University of Johannesburg students hoped the day would bring a sense of relief during this exam season.

It’s Lain Campbell’s description of Bounty Hunters Charity Shop for Cats, as being a mainstay in Melville for decades that he reckons makes this organisation’s work so important.

He is a public relations student at the University of Johannesburg, and recently, he and fellow students hosted an event that encouraged knowledge among other students on what the shop does and the opportunity to visit and play with the cats.

With it being exam season and a large number of major assignments being due they thought it would beneficial for the students to engage with the shop and relieve themselves of the stress of the season by spending time with cats. He also highlighted that there have been numerous studies that show the positive effects of interacting with animals as a form of therapy.

“People had a great time. Nearly all the cats loved visitors, and often there were a few waiting by the door, ready to greet and welcome customers. It wasn’t hard to find a cat who wanted to settle down and get some pats, especially since it was a rainy day,” said Campbell. According to him, people left the shop happier and more relaxed than when they came in.

Along with spending time with the cats, people could explore what the store had to offer. The shop is said to have quite an eclectic selection of goods with something for everyone and new items being up for sale almost daily. Whether it’s a cool pair of Doc Martens or your next favourite novel to sink your teeth into.

Campbell also witnessed the effortless work the charity store and its owner, Gail Millard, puts in to make sure all customers leave happier. “A man came in with a sick kitten, and Gail immediately organised a vet appointment and a treatment plan.”

The charity generates funds from the items sold and because of this the kitten’s owner, who is also a pensioner, did not have to worry about the cost of medication needed as the shop provided that to him for free.

Days like these are something the students hope to host as often as they can, “We have been regulars at the charity for years, and anyway we can help, we’re happy to do so,” said Campbell.
