Try to never walk alone during load-shedding at night

Man sustained injuries when targeted by brazen criminals as he exited taxi in Sophiatown.

Kagisho Botake was brutally attacked when exiting a taxi on Edward Road in Sophiatown after finishing work at night.

“Two men attacked me and took my phone. It is only with the mercy of the lord that they did not murder me.” Photos seen by the Northcliff Melville Times are too graphic to print.

“I want to warn others to be careful, especially during load-shedding as it is dangerous outside at night.”

Sophiatown Police Stations spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn said it is difficult to give advice on how to be safe during load-shedding as ‘it is unrealistic to expect people to stay at home or work when the power is out’.

“Some people have no option but to be out for many reasons. Ideally, especially during load-shedding at night, try to have someone meet you when you arrive from your taxi or home to walk with you to your destination. Sadly there is no advice I can give that will help everyone, unfortunately.”
