Joburg Water links Hursthill 1 and Northcliff reservoirs

It is hoped the month-long job will boost water supply to affected areas and reduce outages.

Johannesburg Water (JW) has completed a month-long job to improve and secure a steady water supply to the struggling Commando System (comprising Brixton, Crosby
and Hursthill).

Johannesburg Waters Nolwazi Dhlamini said, “This intervention, carried out by the Langlaagte depot will boost water supply by linking Hursthill 1 and Northcliff reservoirs.”

She said it was part of ongoing efforts to improve the Hursthill 1 reservoir’s water supply and tackle aging infrastructure.

Workers install pipes to link the Hursthill 1 and Northcliff reservoirs.

“After conducting the necessary modelling, it was determined that it is possible to link the two systems so that the Northcliff reservoir, which is stable and has enough bulk supply can boost the struggling Hursthill 1 reservoir.”

The reservoir runs empty regularly due to Rand Water supply challenges.

A 315mm diameter water pipe link was installed between the existing 600mm diameter and 450mm diameter distribution steel pipes.

“The link was installed at the intersection of Long Road and Eighth Street in Newlands.”
