Repairs to the unusable Greymont bridge have begun, says JRA

The geotechnical investigations are ongoing, the results from which will influence the new bridge design.

The Greymont Bridge on West Road has been unusable for motorists since its collapse in 2018, but work has begun to repair it.

In March, the Northcliff Melville Times outlined the plans by the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) to commence working on the project.

The first deadline set was May 8, for geotechnical investigations to be completed. At the time, operations manager for JRA Bertha Scheepers said, “There are a number of factors that have impacted the delayed implementation of this project, but we are ready to begin.”

When probed for an update following the May 8 deadline, she said, “The geotechnical studies are ongoing and the findings of the samples that need to be delivered to the laboratory for testing are awaited. Depending on the facility’s backlog, laboratory results might take anywhere from three to eight weeks to be sent to us.”

She explained it is from these results that considerations about the new bridge design will be made.

Ward 86 councillor Chantelle Fourie-Shawe said, “I am very happy that they are progressing and we will be keeping tabs on them and their progress.”

Ongoing estimated timelines:

  • Environmental authorisations: March 6– August 31, 2023
  • Completion of detailed designs: May 8–June 5, 2023
  • Documentation and contract administration: June 12–July 17, 2023
  • Project implementation/construction: September 25– May 25, 2024
