Do you know about the ward committee for Ward 88?

Committee members work with the councillor in a non-political, non-partisan way to be of service to the community.

Ward committees are made up of individuals that are elected to support the ward councillor as he or she works for the community.

For Ward 88, the following individuals were elected to serve on the committee with councillor Nicolene Jonker:

1. Health – Maggie Tshule
2. Infrastructure and Services – Felicity Lawlor
3. Sports, Culture and Youth – David Kruger
4. Women, Faith-Based and Community – Natalie Solomons
5. Development Planning – Alan Kitchen
6. Environment – Marguerite Davis
7. Housing – Michelle Wecke
8. Public Safety – Andre Pieterse
9. Transport – Tracey Mulville
10. Economic Development – Ebrahim Mohamed Ali

They are the link between the councillor and the community but should not reflect the political interests of the party concerned. They are elected for a term of five years and represent the community they were elected by and not the ward councillor.

Individuals who step forward to be of service are often those who have deep commitments to the communities they live and work in.

The code of conduct signed states that the committee members always act in the best interests of the entire community.

This includes, not using the position to promote private or personal interests, must not favour any individuals, groups or organisations nor partake in any illegal marches or petitions against the city.

Further, ward committee members must always avoid political conflicts amongst themselves and conflicts between themselves and the ward councillor. Members can express dissatisfaction in writing to the council on the non-performance of a ward councillor through the office of the speaker if issues are unable to be resolved internally.

Jonker said, “It is wonderful to have a group of hard-working and dedicated men and women that carry out their duties that assist the community. I cannot be everywhere all the time and the team assist so much by highlighting issues that need attention and often helping find solutions or resolutions.”
