All Hartjie Patroon knows to do is love

One Brixton family shares the love they have for their beloved rescue dog.

Found nestling in the heart of Ayanda Nkosi is her loveable pooch, Hartjie Patroon.

Getting her name from the heart-shaped design she carries, Hartjie Patroon is everything Ayanda could have a wanted in a four-legged friend, and more.

Hartjie is protective of her family; when she is not sitting on the stoep with Ayanda, you will find her sitting at the feet of other family members, where they do their homework.

Hartjie came into this family’s life on a New Year’s Eve. While the family was driving home, Hartjie, scared of all the fireworks that were going off, ran in front of the car in her attempt to get away from all the noise. The family then advertised her picture within the Brixton community to find out if she belonged to anyone. When no one responded, they took her in. Since then, Hartjie has shown them the love they gave her from the start.

The eight-year-old dog loves any food and is described as having some foxy in her. “But she is the best kind of pavement special,” said the family. When she is not eating her favourite foods, she is getting her cardio in. Hartjie’s second name, Patroon, in Afrikaans means ‘pattern’, but it can also mean bullet. In this household, there is no one faster than her as she dashes through the house like a bullet. The name Patroontjie is also a name she answers to and is an endearment, as she is dearly loved by all.

Though everything about Hartjie Patroon is everything this family couldn’t do without, they mostly love her soft velvet ears, and that she always knows when you are sad and in need of some extra care.

If she could talk, the family thinks her first words would be, ‘When are we going for a walk? Have you packed my ball and what’s for dinner?’
