Love has been the subject of joy and sorrow for centuries and for this young writer it is no different.

Mallika Balikci pines about the powerful emotions that love induces.

Mallika Balikci (16) from Northcliff writes:

Love really is scary. It’s terrifying loving someone, giving someone that trust. It is terrifying being there, and most importantly, it’s terrifying having such emotion towards a person.

It can be really difficult and overwhelming. It’s hard to love someone because you’re afraid to hurt them. Or because you don’t want to make them feel the pain you went through, or even just because you’re afraid of the idea and concept of the word love.

Love makes us do the dumbest of things. I won’t even deny that, I know that feeling.

The moment you lay eyes on them for the first time, you already know that they’re about to change your whole life. When you look at them it is like you can’t help but realise that their smile is as pretty as a sunset. That when you hug them for the first time you get this stream of butterflies that you don’t want to end, because being in their arms is like standing on top of the world.

I know what it’s like to have strong feelings for someone, or as they’d say to be ‘in love’ with someone.

But I would say it’s quite difficult being able to love someone to that extent, to give that person the love they deserve, even though you struggle loving yourself.

Hasn’t it always been this difficult? Knowing that person is about to be your whole world in a matter of seconds.

So yes, love is scary.
